In this inner city backyard in the community of Winston Heights Mount View, we were contacted by the homeowner to transform this blank slate of just turf into a modern contemporary feeling outdoor living space.
Balancing colourful plantings with some low maintenance features, a small water feature and incorporating a small greenhouse for growing a few vegetables were items on the wish list.
We began the layout with a central seeding patio area made from dimensional flagstone that the homeowner had chose to furnish with wicker style furniture with comfy cushions. The central part of the seating area features a contemporary gas fire pit, which will extend the use of the seating area well into the evening hours. In the corner of the property, we installed a pondless bubble rock water feature sound adds a pleasant ambience, and it acts as a focal point from the garden and from the home. This type of feature also attracts wildlife as birds will be attracted to the running water.
The borders of this garden have been designed to have four seasons of interest, with a variety of plant material for both full sun on the north side of the property and shade in the south side, where there are large, overhanging Conifer trees.
A small greenhouse was incorporated for the homeowner to produce some vegetables, and a sharp eyed Gardner will notice that the pot on the patio contains a potato plant.
Modern stylings combined with the plants for a pleasing balance, both mirroring the architecture and blending to natural world.
Concrete curbing and synthetic grass for low maintenance complete this backyard landscape and provide the homeowners with hours of enjoyment.
